SUMMARY:Eco Wonders (ages 7-11): Protecting Our Watersheds
DESCRIPTION:Children ages 7–11 can learn about protecting our watersheds and preventing stormwater pollution through a hands‑on activity.\n\n\nOverview\nKids ages 7-11 will learn how to protect our watersheds and stop stormwater pollution in our community with a hands-on experience building a water filtration device. \nJoin UF/IFAS Extension Florida Sea Grant and Pasco County at the Land O’ Lakes Library for an educational program focused on understanding stormwater pollution in our watersheds. Youth will learn about stormwater pollution sources and environmental impacts. They will also get to experience a hands-on water filtration activity. Parents are welcome to join and learn. \nIf kids out of the age range are interested\, please reach out to me.moore@ufl.edu \nThe program will also introduce an upcoming hands-on community volunteer opportunity\, supported by the Tampa Bay Estuary Program Bay Mini Grant and the Tarpon Tag\, where attendees can take part in the restoration of a local retention pond system to restore habitat and actively reduce nutrient loading. \n  \nAdults and youth can sign up to volunteer for the pond restoration events here! \nMay 3rd- Community Pond Restoration Event Phase 1 \nJuly 12- Community Pond Restoration Event Phase 2 \n  \nSpecial Accommodations: \nThe University of Florida is committed to providing universal access to all of our events. SUMMARY:Community Pond Restoration Event Phase 2: Stormwater Smart Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to help restore a natural bioretention pond by removing invasive plants and planting natives during a community event.\n\n\nIn this Phase 2 of the community restoration project at the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex\, hosted by UF/IFAS Extension Florida Sea Grant in partnership with Pasco County Public Works\, volunteers will help remove invasive plant species from the pond and plant native Florida vegetation along its edges.We welcome adult and youth volunteers! (Youth must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). The project will focus on the restoration of a stormwater retention pond to restore habitat and actively reduce nutrient loading. \n*Note volunteers will likely get wet and dirty! Wear clothes you are okay with getting messy. Please plan on arriving at 8 am to get started with the group\, we may finish early! \nVolunteers will be provided with snacks (light lunch) and drinks for their help in the project! \nWe recommend bringing the following: Sunscreen\, refillable water bottle\, closed-toed shoes (that can get wet); waders (if you have them)\, extra shovel (we will have some) \nYou can also sign up for phase 1 of the project here: \nMay 3rd- Community Pond Restoration Event Phase 1 \nThis project is a part of the UF/IFAS Extension Florida Sea Grant Pasco County grant provided by the Tampa Bay Estuary Program Bay Mini Grant and the Tarpon Tag. The project is focused on reducing stormwater pollution in our watersheds through education and hands-on projects. In-person seminars before and after the pond workshop are being offered to support this project. In the classes\, you will learn about solutions you can adopt at home or in your community to help reduce stormwater pollution and restore natural systems. We will discuss stormwater pollution sources\, environmental impacts\, and nature-based solutions that you can use to help protect our watershed. We recommend you attend one of the classes before or after you volunteer with this project!
